BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) _ M.K. Kanke won a 200-lap race at Mesa Marin Raceway, but Bryan Germone took a big step toward winning a NASCAR title Saturday night.
Kanke won the Port City Racing 200 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour event, collecting $6,000.
``My owner (Mike Bonicelli) is not here, most of my team is not here,'' Kanke said. ``They're snowed in in Denver, and they don't even know we won yet.''
Kanke, who drove a Pontiac, collected a crew comprised of racing friends for the event.
Germone finished second, .86 of a second behind the winner. By virtue of his finish, however, Germone took a commanding lead in the race for the NFSWT driving championship.
He can clinch the title by finishing 26th or better in the final race of the season, Friday's REMAX 300K at Phoenix International Raceway.
Rookie Kurt Busch was third, followed by Bob Lyon, and Mark Reed.
