Utah Football Player Arrested
Sep. 18, 2000
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ A University of Utah football player was arrested on charges of breaking a baseball bat over the head of a teen-ager, sending him to the hospital with serious head injuries.
Defensive end Sean Patrick O'Keefe was immediately suspended after being booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Complex at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The freshman walk-on was being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated assault.
Linebacker Corey Dodds also was suspended because the school received information he was involved in the beating, school spokeswoman Liz Abel said.
A Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman said the arrest stemmed from a fight at a weekend party where police said O'Keefe broke a baseball bat over a 17-year-old boy's head.
The boy, who was not identified by police, was still hospitalized late Monday.
Abel said the suspensions did not appear to affect the rest of the team.
``I don't think most of them even knew about it,'' she said. ``These are kind of peripheral players.''
The school said the suspensions could be lifted if a police investigation clears the players.
