SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (AP) — Southern California authorities say a 3-year-old boy has died after being severely injured in a fire that tore through a condominium without working smoke alarms.
Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said early Wednesday that the child died at a hospital. His mother and 2-year-old brother remain in grave condition.
Concialdi says the fire was started by an unsupervised child playing with a lighter.
Nine people, including six children, were injured by the blaze that filled the four-bedroom unit in San Juan Capistrano with heavy smoke Tuesday. One woman suffered burns and severe leg injuries after she jumped from a window.
Concialdi said Tuesday that there were 17 people living in the rented condo.
The fire displaced about 80 people from eight units damaged by fire, water and smoke.
