PASADENA, Calif. (AP) _ Greg Vanney, Clint Mathis and Paul Caligiuri scored in a tie-breaking shootout as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the San Jose Clash 4-3 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Ronald Cerritos scored the only shootout goal for San Jose, which sent the game into the shootout by scoring twice in the final 29 minutes.

With the Galaxy ahead 3-1, Victor Mella took an Eddie Lewis pass and scored to cut the lead to 3-2 in the 61st minute.

Eric Wynalda later tied it 3-3 with a 20-yard shot inside the right post off a Martin Vasquez pass in the 78th minute.

The Galaxy took a 1-0 lead when Martin Machon scored on a header in the 17th minute. Eduardo Hurtado made it 2-0 when he launched a low shot from about 20 yards out that deflected of San Jose defender Tim Martin's leg into the net.

A goal by San Jose's Lawrence Lozzano narrowed it to 2-1 in the 43rd minute, but Welton made it 3-1 when he put in a short shot past San Jose goalie David Kramer in the 47th minute.

Los Angeles outshot San Jose 13-10. The Galaxy also had eight shots on goal compared to the Clash's six.

The announced attendance of 36,281 was the lowest for a Galaxy opener. Los Angeles drew 69,255 for its 1996 opener and 53,147 last season.
