Pop Singer 'Chico' DeBarge Sentenced For Drug Conspiracy
Mar. 16, 1989
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) _ Pop singer Jonathon ''Chico'' DeBarge drew five years and eight months in prison for conspiring to bring 2.2 pounds of cocaine into Michigan from California.
Hoping to convince U.S. District Judge Richard Enslen of his good character, DeBarge, 22, sent Enslen press clippings, including one about his anti-drug campaign at a junior high school less than a month before his arrest.
But the judge countered Wednesday, ''Who have you harmed by your hypocrisy?''
DeBarge, his brother, Robert, and four other people were convicted last year of conspiring to distribute cocaine.
Robert DeBarge is serving a prison sentence of more than five years.
DeBarge, a Grand Rapids native who gained stardom last year with a pop-funk album on the Motown label, is to report to prison April 12.
