Citadel Expels Cadet for Hazing
Oct. 04, 1997
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ A senior cadet at The Citadel has been expelled for hazing nine male freshmen, school officials said Friday.
The cadet, who was not identified, was accused of punching male cadets in a barracks on Sept. 24. The cadets reported the incident to their company officers and none were seriously injured.
The Citadel, an all-male school until last year, has been under scrutiny since two of the first four female cadets to enroll there claimed they were harassed by upperclassmen.
In the latest case, school officials said they were unsure why the senior targeted the underclassmen, but school President John Grinalds said the cadet had alcohol on his breath.
None of the 20 female cadets now at the college was involved in the incident.
