Massachusetts Gov. Patrick won't endorse in 2016
May. 20, 2014
BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick says he's a big admirer of Hillary Rodham Clinton — he's just not ready to endorse her or any other Democrat in the 2016 race for the White House.
Patrick, responding to reporters' questions Tuesday, said he's a fan of competition and that the success of Democrats hinges on voters feeling like they are being engaged and not taken for granted.
He said the sense that any one candidate is the inevitable nominee would dampen that enthusiasm.
Patrick called Clinton "a fantastic person and a very, very strong candidate," but said that it's important that any candidate "who wants to win is hungry for it and shows it."
Patrick said he doesn't anticipate endorsing any candidate before the Democratic primary and that he won't be a candidate in 2016.
