AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ George Phillips had 20 points and Adam Benton scored 18 as Akron beat Kent 71-51 Monday night.

Phillips and Chris Hahn each had eight rebounds for the Zips (8-16, 6-10 Mid-American Conference). Benton, who came off the bench, also grabbed seven boards and had four steals.

Akron star Jimmal Ball, who played only 18 minutes, was held to seven points, one rebound and one assist.

For the Golden Flashes (9-15, 7-9), Ed Norvell had 14 points and four steals, and Art Robertson added 12 points. Geoff Vaughn had nine rebounds and Robertson pulled down eight.

Kent was hampered by poor shooting. The Flashes were 20 of 58 (34.5 percent) from the field, and hit only 2 of 14 (14.3 percent) of their shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Zips controlled the game from the start. With the score tied 2-2, Scott Gooden hit two free throws with 15:45 left in the first half to put Akron up 4-2. The Zips never trailed again.

Up 34-23 at the half, Akron opened the second half with a 25-6 run that put the game out of reach. The spurt ended with a Phillips layup at the 9:50 mark.
