WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) _ Mike DeRocckis scored five of his game-high 20 points in the final minute as Drexel edged Monmouth 57-51 on Saturday.
Drexel (1-0) battled from behind the entire first half as Joe Fermino netted seven of his team-high 17 points before the break to give Monmouth (0-3) a 29-28 lead.
The Dragons clamped down on the Hawks in the second half, limiting Monmouth to 30.8 percent shooting. Drexel took its first lead with 16:29 left and pushed the margin to 52-44 with 5:50 to go.
Sophomore Petrick Sanders had six of his 11 points in the half. Monmouth closed to within 51-51 at the 1:30 mark, but failed to convert a basket in the remaining time.
Monmouth takes to the road Friday in the San Francisco Northwestern Mutual Classic.
