Two Soldiers Killed in Indonesia
Jun. 26, 1999
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Separatist rebels killed two soldiers and wounded at least four civilians in three attacks in Aceh province, the military and the official Antara news agency said today.
A military official said rebels in a passing car fired at a sergeant, killing him and injuring three of his wife's relatives near his house in Leubu Masjid village in North Aceh district. A soldier was shot nearby while riding a motorbike.
Both attacks occurred Thursday.
Antara reported that on the same day, unidentified gunmen opened fire at passing vehicles on the main road between Banda Aceh and Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province. At least one person was injured.
Violence has heightened in recent weeks in Aceh, a province 1,100 miles northwest of Jakarta.
At least 10 people, including a soldier, were killed earlier this week as a rebel band intensified a campaign for a separate Islamic state, police and witnesses said.
