JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi woman was shot to death while waiting in her car at a traffic light.
Jackson police say 23-year-old Chelsie Lynn Kirschten was in the driver's seat late Thursday near downtown Jackson when a man walked up and shot through the driver's side window of the Pontiac sedan. She was shot in the upper back.
Officers say a passenger was in the front seat. The car kept moving for about a half mile (0.8 kilometer) before it stopped near Interstate 55. Kirschten was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators told local media that nothing was stolen and the shooting appeared to be a random act.
It was the 37th homicide of the year in Jackson.
