GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) _ Beer-maker Adolph Coors Co. reported a third-quarter net income of $38.9 million Thursday, a 13 percent increase from the same period a year ago, despite a decline in sales.

The earnings of $1.05 per share compared with the $34.5 million, or 92 cents per share, Coors earned in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding items, Coors earned $35.2 million, or 95 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call were expecting 66 cents per share.

Coors, the nation's third-biggest brewer, reported $634.7 million in sales, a 3 percent decrease from the $657.1 million in the year-ago period.

The company sold 5.9 million barrels, down 5.3 percent from the 6.2 million barrels sold in the same period last year.

The company's net sales for the nine months ending Sept. 30 totaled $1.87 billion, up 2.1 percent from $1.83 billion last year. The company has sold 17.4 million barrels, slightly down from last year's nine month total.

Profits rose to $107.1 million from $97.7 million.

Shares of Coors were trading at $47.52 Thursday, up $1.84, on the New York Stock Exchange.
