ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) _ Chasity Melvin, the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year, scored 22 points in the second half Friday as North Carolina State broke open a close game and defeated Georgia Tech 88-70 in the ACC women's basketball tournament.

Melvin finished with 31 points, her season high, and grabbed 10 rebounds to help N.C. State (19-8) move into a semifinal game against 12th-ranked North Carolina (26-4).

Kolleen Kreul added 14 points for the hot-shooting Wolfpack, Jennifer Howard had 13 and Umeki Webb 11.

Georgia Tech (14-16) had a 42-40 lead at halftime of a see-saw game and the score was tied at 46-46 following a basket by Georgia Tech's Christie Finney with 16:43 to play.

The 6-foot-3 Melvin reeled off 14 points in a 10:22 span, leading the Wolfpack to a 70-56 lead with 7:45 to play. Georgia Tech was never able to cut the margin to under 10 points after that.

N.C. State hit 20 of 34 second-half shots from the field and 34 of 67 for the game and also had a 41-38 rebounding edge.

Kisha Ford led Georgia Tech with 16 points. Christie Finney and Stacey Buchannon each had 13 and freshman Carla Munnion 12.

Melvin made 13 of 18 shots and five of six free throws.
