COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Eating ice cream is one of life's simple pleasures. It brings back wholesome family memories.

That's the kind of atmosphere Susie and Don Larsen want to create in their new Lake Manawa-area restaurant, Doozie's Homemade Ice Cream and Burgers.

"Ice cream is a feeling thing," Susie told The Daily Nonpareil (http://bit.ly/2tWUOjr ). "Everybody has a favorite flavor that stems back to childhood memories."

Don added, "Hopefully, people will remember eating butter brickle or their favorite flavor down by the lake or talking to Grandma. Ice cream is a simple pleasure in life."

The Larsens opened Doozie's in April, and it has become quite a treat for neighborhood folks.

"We're having a lot of fun, the neighborhood has been great," Susie said. "It's a good, neighborhood feel."

The Larsens purchased the property at an auction three years ago and demolished the previous building that was there. That structure had been a neighborhood fixture since the late 1950s, Don said. After a year-and-a-half of design work and preparations, their new building began construction last summer and was completed in April.

For those wondering, Doozie's is a combination of the Larsens' first names. Doozie also means something is unique in its class of things.

"I think a lot of people don't know we're here yet," Don said.

The Larsens and their staff, including manager Kelsey Runyon, serve "lots of cream" ice cream and quality soft-serves made right there, in-house.

"We keep 10 flavors in the dipping cabinet," Susie said.

Patrons can enjoy their favorite flavors in cups or cones, including homemade waffle cones, shakes or malts, floats or freezes, sundaes, smoothies or Doozie blenders.

Doozie's also serves all-fresh burgers, breaded pork loins, chicken sandwiches, patty melts, hot dogs, chicken tenders and grilled cheese sandwiches. The burgers come in the one-patty Doozie, the Double Doozie and, for those who think they can handle it, the Triple Doozie.

What's more, the fries are made right there in the kitchen, Don said. There are also fresh salads.

"We make all of our dressings and sauces," Susie said.

"Nothing is frozen, except the ice cream," Don said.

There's outdoor as well as indoor seating, plus a walk-up window.

"It's very family-oriented," Runyon said.
