FORNEY, Texas (AP) _ Six high school students and two coaches were struck by lightning during football practice Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Jeff Place, a registered nurse at Baylor University Medical Center, told KXAS-TV that one student suffered cardiac arrest at the scene and was in critical condition. Five were in stable condition, he said.

``If this kid makes it, it's probably due to some fast acting by the coaches'' who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Police Chief Rick Barnes said.

The condition of the coaches, who were taken to The Medical Center of Mesquite, were not immediately available.

The victims' identities were not immediately released.

About 100 people were on the field at Forney High School when a storm suddenly erupted shortly before 4 p.m., Barnes said.

``They were in the process of getting kids off the field and _ boom _ it hit,'' he said. ``There had been some dark clouds and a bit of a rumble prior, but the lightning struck all at once.''

Forney is 20 miles east of Dallas. The Forney Jackrabbits start their season Sept. 8.
