LAS VEGAS (AP) — After taking a hit when the mid-2000s housing bubble crashed, swimming pool builders in the Las Vegas valley are riding a new wave of demand.

More than 1,700 pool permits were issued in Henderson, North Las Vegas and unincorporated areas of Clark County last year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal found.

Permit numbers for the city of Las Vegas were not available. But for each of the other areas, more than twice as many pool permits were issued last year than in 2012.

Gary Verbano, owner of Vintage Pools, said everyone he knows in the business is "extremely busy."

In 2004, Jim Alexander of Renaissance Pools and Spas built 600 pools. During the recession, he built only 50 a year and temporarily closed two stores. But Alexander said he'll likely construct more than 200 pools this year.

Most of Joe Vassallo's work at Paragon Pools is for new houses. Vassallo said his business usually picks up when home construction increases.

Las Vegas firm Home Builders Research found new home sales are increasing, though they're not back to pre-recession highs.

In 2005, there were almost 39,000 new home sales in Clark County. Last year, there were 9,400.

Vassallo said his business peaked at $8 million annually before the housing market tanked, but he thinks he'll make about half that this year. He kept his business afloat during the recession by remodeling and repairing pools — some left at abandoned homes.

Ivan Friedmutter, owner of custom pool, spa and landscape company Poolscapes, said swimming pool construction, along with higher car sales and gambling revenues, are signs of the reviving economy.

"Everything's a little busier," Friedmutter said.
