ORANIENBURG, Germany (AP) _ Police evacuated 10,000 people Monday from a town northwest of Berlin while munitions experts defused a World War II bomb.

The 1,000-pound bomb was found nine feet underground at a construction site in Oranienburg, police said. Experts successfully defused it in about four hours.

Oranienburg, a town of 29,000 people 12 miles northwest of Berlin, was a major industrial center during the war. Last April, a construction worker there was seriously injured when his excavator set off a bomb.

Crews have frequently uncovered old bombs and ammunition during the widespread reconstruction in the former East Germany.

In September 1994, a 550-pound American bomb blew up during drilling for a foundation in eastern Berlin, killing three workers and injuring 17 others.
