Man Jumps From Notre Dame; Kills Self, Tourist
Jun. 26, 1989
PARIS (AP) _ A man jumped from the south tower of Notre Dame cathedral Monday, killing himself and a teen-aged girl standing on the sidewalk, police said.
The unidentified man struck Martine Blot, 14, who was part of a school group from the Charles Peguy College in Paris, police said. Both died instantly.
A witness said the girl was standing to the side of her tour group when she was struck.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
Police said there have been at least two suicides from the cathedral tower. The installation of anti-jumping devices at Notre Dame has been impossible for technical reasons connected with the lighting of the church, they said.
