ST. LOUIS (AP) _ St. Louis Cardinals outfielder and catcher Eli Marrero will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair ligament damage in his right ankle.

Team physician George Paletta will perform the operation, the club said Monday.

Marrero severely sprained his ankle Sunday when he slipped on wet grass while chasing a fly ball against the Chicago Cubs. He was carried off on a stretcher.

The game was postponed in the top of the fifth inning because of rain and 40 mph winds at Wrigley Field.

Marrero is batting .227 with two homers and 15 RBIs.
