NEW YORK (AP) _ A jumbo jet waiting on a runway to takeoff at Kennedy Airport had to return to the gate Wednesday after a passenger became unruly.

As the Paris-bound Tower Air 747 waited on the runway, a 29-year-old French citizen became unruly and crew members noticed he had brought his own liquor bottle onto the jet, which is against regulations, said Port Authority spokesman Allen Morrison.

The crew confiscated the bottle and the man became agitated and made irrational statements, Morrison said.

``The pilot decided he did not want to fly this guy to France so he went back to the gate,'' Morrison said.

The passenger, who was not identified, ``tried to open the outside door and he also struggled with the flight attendant,'' said Jim Peters, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

The man was removed from the plane and was in custody late Wednesday. He could be charged with interfering with a flight crew, Morrison said.

No one answered the phone at Tower Air's offices.
