Irvin hurt in first period

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Michael Irvin sprained his right shoulder in the first quarter of Sunday's NFC playoff game with the Carolina Panthers, and the Dallas wide receiver was unlikely to return.
Irvin, the subject of considerable controversy during the week when a woman accused him and offensive lineman Erik Williams of sexual assault, went to the dressing room for X-rays in obvious pain. The X-rays revealed no fracture.
Irvin was hurt when he was tackled by Lamar Lathon after catching a 22-yard pass from Troy Aikman.
Irvin sat on the bench for a few minutes before being taken to the dressing room. He sank to one knee in pain while in the tunnel leading to the locker room.
