MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ Steve Payne led five Cardinals in double figures as Ball State trounced Central Michigan 84-54 Wednesday night in the Mid-American Conference.

Payne scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds as Ball State (13-8, 8-5 MAC) blew the game open in the second half.

Central Michigan (3-18, 0-13) traded the lead with Ball State through most of the first half, going ahead for the last time 26-24 at 5:36 of the first period.

It was all Ball State from there.

Up 34-28 at halftime, the Cardinals steadily built their lead throughout the second half. They led by 20 points, 62-42, with 7:08 left, and stretched that advantage to 30 at 3:41.

Ball State shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half, compared with Central Michigan's 31 percent, and hit nearly 57 percent of field goal attempts for the game. Central Michigan finished at 36 percent and was outrebounded 37-29.

Bonzi Wells and Marcus Norris each scored 12 points for Ball State, and Randy Zachary and Amos Gregory added 10 apiece. Norris dished out 8 assists.

Ryan Jensen led Central Michigan with 18 points, 14 in the second half. Vince Edwards had 11 and Jason Hoyt 10. Chad Guelda pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
