GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A brother and sister in South Carolina have been sentenced on charges related to the slaying of the sister's estranged husband.
News outlets report 36-year-old Jane Katherine Hughes and 32-year-old Jacob Cody Hughes were convicted Wednesday of conspiracy to commit murder. Jane Hughes also was convicted of murder and has been sentenced to 30 years without parole. Jacob Hughes was sentenced to four years. He plans to appeal the case.
Evidence presented in court said that in 2015, Jane Hughes' estranged husband, John Ferrell, was out with Jacob Hughes. Ferrell returned home and Jane Hughes beat him with a hammer. Ferrell tried to escape and was fatally shot by the sibling's father, John Hughes. John Hughes is currently serving a 40-year sentence on charges including murder.
