HOLLY, Mich. (AP) — Elissa Slotkin is up with her first TV ad in a competitive race in Michigan's 8th Congressional District.

Slotkin, who is running against second-term Republican Rep. Mike Bishop, launched a 30-second spot Tuesday. It touts her service as a CIA analyst in Iraq and her national security work during the administrations of Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama.

Slotkin says in the ad that Congress needs people "who remember it's about service to country, not themselves."

The 8th District stretches between Lansing and the northern Detroit suburbs. The Republican-leaning seat is a top target for Democrats hoping to retake the House in the first midterm election of President Donald Trump's tenure.

Slotkin says she joined the CIA after 9/11. She later worked in the White House and Pentagon.
