Arizona Activates 1B Durazo
Jun. 25, 2000
PHOENIX (AP) _ The Arizona Diamondbacks activated first baseman Erubiel Durazo from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and designated outfielder Bernard Gilkey for assignment.
The Diamondbacks went into Saturday night's game with the Colorado Rockies 7-11 in their last 18 _ a stretch in which they scored more than four runs just four times.
Durazo, 25, who hit over .400 with two minor league teams before he was called up last year, has hit .287 in 44 games this season. He had six homers and 24 RBIs before he went on the DL on June 30.
He had surgery June 1 to repair torn cartilage in his right wrist.
During a rugged rehabilitation this week, Durazo played in a doubleheader for Triple-A Tucson and an extended spring game in an 18-hour span. He would have been activated Friday night, but the Rockies used left-hander Brian Bohanon, and Arizona manager Buck Showalter wanted him to get his first start against right-hander Masato Yoshii, who started Saturday night.
If Gilkey, hitting .110 in 38 games, clears waivers the team will owe him nearly $3.5 million of his $5.25 million contract.
