Lawmakers ask the state to expedite resurfacing of Route 146

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Lawmakers are asking Rhode Island's transportation department to expedite the resurfacing of a state highway at the Massachusetts border.
Twenty northern Rhode Island legislators are petitioning the state Department of Transportation to fix Route 146 between the Interstate 295 interchange in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and the Massachusetts border.
They sent a letter to the agency's director Thursday. It's signed by members of both parties but the effort is being led by two Republicans, Rep. Brian Newberry and Sen. Thomas Paolino.
Newberry, of North Smithfield, said Friday these terrible conditions give visitors and residents the wrong impression about Rhode Island when they travel on Route 146.
He says Route 146 isn't slated for maintenance until 2022, but that's too long to wait because the road surface has deteriorated so much.
