Dec. 28, 2001
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Reliever Alan Embree agreed Thursday to a $500,000, one-year contract with San Diego, giving the Padres a veteran setup man to fill in while two young relievers recover from arm surgery.
Embree, who turns 32 on Jan. 23, has pitched eight seasons in the majors, with Cleveland, Atlanta, Arizona, San Francisco and the Chicago White Sox.
The left-hander was a combined 1-4 with a 7.33 ERA in 61 appearances for the Giants and White Sox in 2001, striking out 59 in 54 innings. After opening the year in San Francisco, he was traded to Chicago on June 29.
He has appeared in at 60 games in four of the last five seasons, including the last three in a row.
Embree is 18-19 with a 4.86 ERA in 364 career games, all but four out of the bullpen.
Padres relievers Kevin Walker and Tom Davey are rehabbing after their surgeries.
