Krajicek Tops Sampras in Stuttgart

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) _ Richard Krajicek upset top-ranked and apparently rusty Pete Sampras 6-4, 6-4 today in the third round of the Eurocard Open.
Sampras, the Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, lost only for the 10th time this year.
He had not played for more than three weeks before this tournament, taking a break after winning the lucrative Grand Slam Cup in Munich, Germany, last month.
In a match with few rallies between two serve-and-volley specialists, a few points were going to decide the outcome and Krajicek won them.
He got a service break in the ninth game when Sampras hit a forehand passing shot long. Krajicek then served out the set.
Krajicek broke Sampras again in the ninth game of the second, this time when Sampras hit a backhand volley into the net. The match was over in 59 minutes.
Sampras's ouster left only Patrick Rafter from the top eight seeds in the $2.05-million tournament. Rafter played a late match against David Prinosil.
Krajicek, seeded 16th, won this tournament in 1995 and is seeking his fourth title of the year. He won Wimbledon in 1996, while Sampras has four Wimbledon titles, plus four U.S. Open championships and two Australian Open titles.
Like Krajicek, Marcelo Rios also stayed on course for a berth in the eight-man ATP World Championships next month in Hannover, Germany, by beating another contender, seventh-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Rios, seeded ninth, reached the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory. Kafelnikov was up a break in the first set and held two set points in the tiebreaker before Rios rallied to win the set.
Seeking his second title of the year, Rios wasted five match points before Kafelnikov hit a forehand into the net. Rios never had beaten Kafelnikov in three previous matches.
