BOSTON (AP) _ More than 400 women faculty members and librarians at nine state colleges have won $1.4 million in back pay and raises under terms settling a sex discrimination suit.

Framingham State College professor and campus union leader Josephine Reiter called the outcome ''the best example of what can happen when people work cooperatively.''

The court order awarded $930,000 in back pay and $465,000 in pay increases.

About 200 colleges and universities in the United States have been looking over pay schedules for possible sex bias, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity. About 100 already have made salary adjustments.

Negotiations will begin shortly in a similar suit against all of Massachusetts 15 community colleges, said Betty Gittes, attorney for the faculty and librarians in both cases.

U.S. District Judge John J. McNaught approved the settlement Thursday.
