Reagan Proclaims Columbus Day

WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Reagan signed a proclamation Saturday declaring Oct. 14 Columbus Day, the White House announced.
Christopher Columbus won a place in the hearts of all Americans ''by challenging the unknown and defying the doubters,'' Reagan said in the proclamation. ''In doing so he set in motion a chain of events which transformed the world and led to the birth of the great country in which we live.''
