APTOS, Calif. (AP) _ Michael Chang defeated Taylor Dent, 6-2, 6-2 Thursday night to reach the quarterfinals of the Safeway Challenger tournament.

Chang had little trouble handling the power of the 18-year-old Dent. Dent, an American, is the son of Australian tennis great Phil Dent and is ranked 270th in the world.

Chang, ranked 59th, will face eighth-seeded Cristiano Caratti of Italy in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Caratti advanced by rallying past Israels Amir Hadad, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Tournament defending champion Cecil Mamiit, seeded second, was forced to retire with a knee injury while trailing Michael Hill in the third set.
