NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans authorities say nine men are accused of running a heroin ring, and eight are behind bars.
The Orleans Parish district attorney's office says all are charged with conspiracy to racketeer, with more charges likely and more people being investigated.
District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro Jr. and Police Superintendent Michael Harrison announced the indictment and arrests on Wednesday.
Police say five were arrested last week, and three already were jailed on unrelated charges.
Cannizzaro says the indictment describes dealing in heroin, cocaine, marijuana, Ecstasy, prescription pills and methamphetamine, plus illegal weapons possession.
They say the group sold drugs on Dumaine Street in the Treme (truh-MAY) neighborhood.
Cannizzaro says bond was set at $500,000 for eight of the men and $100,000 for a 17-year-old with no adult criminal history.
