MAUNA KEA-OIL LEAK
HONOLULU — Officials from a Big Island astronomical observatory say they have discovered an oil leak from the hydraulic system supporting one of their telescopes. The Star Advertiser reports officials from the W.M. Keck Observatory recently notified the state Department of Health of the leak, even though it was detected in April. It's unknown how much oil was leaked, but officials have found no obvious dripping or pouring and say the leak appears to be small. SENT: 130 words. UPCOMING: 190 words.
The first monk seal pup born in Hawaii this year is a female. The Garden Island reports that the female monk seal pup has already been weaned and is learning to forage for her own food on the south side of Kauai. Jamie Thompton with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says they expect a few more monk seal pups will be born this season. SENT: 130 words. UPCOMING: 250 words.
