Man Jumps To Death From Casino Tower

LAS VEGAS (AP) _ A 24-year-old man scaled two security barriers and jumped to his death from the observation deck of the 1,149-foot Stratosphere Tower hotel-casino.
The jumper, identified as Mitchell M. Mayfield of Tooele, Utah, bounced off a glass-enclosed observation area that juts out from beneath the deck. His body landed in bushes about 30 feet from workers in a valet parking area. No one on the ground was injured.
The man had to overcome several obstacles to jump off the deck near the 1,100-foot level of the tower late Wednesday.
The first barrier is 5 feet high and the second about 10 feet high. In addition, an alarm is triggered as soon as the first barrier is cleared. At least one security guard is always on duty on the observation deck, said Tom Willer, Stratosphere vice president of marketing.
Willer doubted the hotel would change its security procedures.
``This gentleman was unwavering in his resolve to end his life quickly, he said. ``And in those cases, no matter where you are, it is very difficult to prevent somebody from taking their life.''
