SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Australia, starting its campaign to qualify for the 2002 World Cup, and Paraguay played to a scoreless draw Friday in the first of three soccer internationals.

The Socceroos were the more dominant team and created a number of scoring opportunities while Australian goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac was only really tested once in the 90 minutes.

Referee Simon Micallef issued seven yellow cards, although the game was not highly physical.

Australia is favored to win the Oceania qualifying series and will then meet the fifth-place South American team for a place in the 2002 World Cup finals.
