Mar. 12, 1998
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Purdue University said today it has indefinitely suspended baseball coach Steve Green for striking a player.
The incident occurred Tuesday after a tournament game in Fresno, Calif., the school announced.
The player's name was not released.
No one was injured in the incident, Purdue said.
Purdue said associate athletic director Joni Comstock flew to California on Wednesday to gather facts about the incident.
``Purdue follows a policy that all student-athletes will be treated with respect,'' Comstock said in a prepared statement. ``Sportsmanlike conduct applies to everyone. An unfortunate incident occurred and I will investigate thoroughly. ... We will take the appropriate action after all the facts have been gathered.''
Assistant coach Bob Shepherd was placed in charge of the team and, with fellow assistants, Mark Kingston and Brian McDonald, will coach the team through the remainder of a spring trip.
