White Youths Attacked by Blacks in Portugal in Skinhead Reprisal
Jun. 16, 1995
LISBON, Portugal (AP) _ Black youths have carried out two reprisal attacks against whites for the killing of a young black by skinheads, an anti-racist group said Friday.
The two attacks took place late Thursday after the funeral of Alcindo Monteiro, a Portuguese citizen of Cape Verde origin bludgeoned to death by skinheads, Lisbon-based SOS Racism said.
Two white soldiers and a civilian were attacked by about 20 blacks at a suburban railroad station. Another group of three whites were beaten up by a dozen black youths at a beachside cafe, the group said.
Doctors at Lisbon's Sao Francisco Xavier hospital said one of the soldiers was hospitalized with a broken jaw. The others suffered minor injuries.
Military officials said the three men at the Oeiras train station had been mistaken for skinheads because of their short, military-style hair cuts. During the scuffle they shouted they were soldiers not skinheads, but the attackers ignored them, the officials said.
An anonymous phone call to SOS Racism threatened ``revenge for what happened in Oeiras, even if it means using arms.''
