SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) _ Don Imus has encountered a wave of opposition over water use at his proposed ranch for sick children.

The nationally syndicated radio personality has raised millions of dollars for the children's ranch, which he hopes to open this summer.

Imus' water plans call for pumping up to 100 acre-feet of water per year from four proposed 900-foot-deep wells. One acre-foot, the amount needed to cover an acre a foot deep, is about 326,000 gallons.

``We're concerned about the impact on the wells around here of any deep pumping,'' said Nicasio Romero, a commissioner on the El Ancon Acequia, an irrigation association.

``For something like this even to be proposed is ridiculous,'' he said.

Imus has declined to discuss the project, and there was no answer Friday at his New York office.
