Motorist Finds Body of Missing French Hitchhiker
Dec. 30, 1995
LONDON (AP) _ A 19-year-old French student hitchhiking her way to visit a cousin in England was found dead by the side of a road on Friday.
Celine Figard had disappeared 10 days earlier after she was seen getting into a truck at a service station near Newbury, west of London.
Her body was found about 70 miles from the service station by a motorist who spotted the corpse in woods by the side of the road, police said.
It was identified by Jean-Marc Figard, the 24-year-old cousin whom she had been going to visit in Hampshire in southern England.
Figard had hitchhiked from her home on a farm in the village of Ferrieres-Les-Scey, southeast of Paris, because strikes had stopped buses and trains from running.
Her father, Bernard Figard, made an emotional appeal this week on British television for his daughter's safe return. Police throughout Britain had been on alert for her.
