DENVER (AP) _ The Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday acquired 19-year veteran Dale Hunter from the Washington Capitals for a draft pick.

Hunter began his career with the Quebec Nordiques, now the Avalanche. He played for the Nordiques until June 1987, when he was traded to the Capitals.

To get Hunter, the Avalanche gave up one of its two second-round picks in the upcoming 1999 entry draft in return for Washington's third-round pick in the 2000 entry draft.

Hunter is the only player in NHL history to tally 300 goals and 3,000 penalty minutes.

Overall, he has 321 goals, 693 assists and 3,548 penalty minutes in 1,395 career games. His playoff totals include 41 goals, 73 assists and 691 penalty minutes in 167 games played.

He is the NHL's all-time leader in playoff penalty minutes and will be making the 18th playoff appearance in his career.
