CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ North Carolina scored 39 of the first 40 points and broke a school record as the No. 5 Tar Heels made quick work of South Carolina State in a 106-35 victory Tuesday night.

The 71-point margin of victory is the largest in program history for North Carolina, eclipsing a 64-point win over Appalachian State in 1982.

The Tar Heels (10-1) led 39-1 with nine minutes to play in the first half and never looked back in a balanced scoring effort. Reserve Leah Sharp led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Chanel Wright added 13 points and LaQuanda Barksdale had 12.

North Carolina played without senior forward Tracy Reid, who had to sit out the game after failing to meet team conditioning requirements. And freshman Juana Brown left the game four minutes into the second half with a wrist injury. Brown is the top-scoring freshman in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 13 points per game.

Enjyi Smalls and Twana Wright each scored six points to lead South Carolina State (2-4). The Bulldogs managed only 24 percent (12-of-50) shooting for the game and turned the ball over 31 times.
