TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ Johnny Borneman took advantage of a late-race caution, went to the lead on the last lap and won the Tucson 250 NASCAR Winston West Series event Saturday at Raceway Park.

The event featured a battle of series rookies, with Borneman dominating much of the first half of the and fellow freshman Tony Schmidt leading most of the second half.

Schmidt's lead evaporated, however, when the yellow flag waved on lap 240. Schmidt struggled to maintain the lead on the restart in a two-lap dash to the finish as Borneman mounted a charge.

The pair ran side-by-side as they took the white flag, but Borneman pulled ahead to win in his Ford.

Schmidt held on for second in a Pontiac, with Brandon Ash a close third in a Ford. Fourth went to Sammy Potashnick, followed by Hershel McGriff _ the final car on the lead lap. They were in Chevrolets.
