WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says a donkey has been removed from a West Greenwich home and is now in the care of a local politician.

WPRI-TV reports the RISPCA could not house the large animal on its premises after it was seized Wednesday, so Town Council President Mark Tourgee answered the call.

The original owner of the donkey cooperated with the RISPCA, which didn't press charges.

The RISPCA says the donkey had overgrown hooves, which made it hard to walk.

Tourgee says he plans to get the donkey's hooves clipped Friday and will officially adopt the animal.
