Firefighters in training save man whose kayak overturned
Jun. 30, 2016
LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — Fire officials say firefighters conducting training exercises in Lawrence were in the right place at the right time when they saved a kayaker who capsized in the Merrimack River.
Cpt. Tara Reardon says firefighters were heading up the river Wednesday when they passed the man in the kayak.
About 20 minutes later, the crew headed back and noticed that the kayak had overturned.
Reardon says the 50-year-old man was unconscious and submerged 10 yards away. Firefighters pulled the man from the water, administered CPR and took him back to the dock where paramedics took over.
The man was taken to Lawrence General Hospital with critical injuries. He was transferred to a Boston hospital where he's listed in serious condition. He wasn't immediately identified.
