Italian Town Considers Statue of Madonna
Dec. 05, 1987
PACENTRO, Italy (AP) _ This central Italian town is thinking about putting up a statue of Madonna, the rock star whose grandparents emigrated from Pacentro in the early 1900s.
A Naples-based group called Friends of Show Business, which is sponsoring the initiative, met with town officials Saturday to show them a model of the proposed bronze bust.
Mayor Raffaele Santini said the town would study the offer to determine whether the statue would have ''economic and touristic benefits.''
''Also, we need to hear what Madonna thinks,'' Santini said. ''From what I hear, her relatives here aren't in favor of the idea.''
Madonna still has family in Pacentro, located in the Abruzzi region east of Rome.
Madonna gave concerts last summer in Turin and Florence.
