BYU Defensive Back Out for Season
Sep. 04, 2003
PROVO, Utah (AP) _ BYU cornerback Brandon Heaney will have surgery on his shoulder and miss the rest of the season.
Heaney, who missed the end of last season with a dislocated left shoulder, said Wednesday he will have his other shoulder operated on next Thursday. He injured it last week in the third quarter of the Cougars' 24-13 victory over Georgia Tech.
Heaney said he dislocated the shoulder, tore the labrum and a muscle and chipped a bone when he got tangled up with a receiver.
Heaney, a senior who started eight games last season and had three interceptions and 34 tackles, will ask the NCAA for a medical hardship and another year of eligibility.
``Knowing that in the end I'm going to have surgery no matter what and I know my season is going to fall short at some point, I'm opting to have the surgery now and hopefully get a medical redshirt,'' Heaney said.
