WAIKOLOA, Hawaii (AP) _ Second-seeded Lisa Raymond beat 17-year-old Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 7-6 (7) on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big Island Championships.

``I played the big points well,'' said Raymond, who saved three set points in the second set. ``I didn't make silly mistakes and used my experience to get through those points.

``She's an up-and-coming really good player. The thing that surprised me the most was her wheels. She has great movement and gets to a lot of balls. She's young and she has her whole future ahead of her.''

Raymond, seeking her fourth WTA Tour title, will face seventh-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain, who led Sarah Taylor 6-1, 2-0 when Taylor retired because of a sprained left foot.

Jill Craybas also advanced, beating fifth-seeded Meilen Tu 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-0 in a match that was suspended because of darkness after the second set Wednesday. Craybas will face Spain's Gala Leon Garcia, a winner Wednesday.

In the other quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Elena Likhovtseva of Russia will doubles partner Cara Black of Zimbabwe, and Samantha Reeves will face Belgium's Els Callens.

Likhovtseva beat Ansley Cargill 6-3, 6-3, and Black defeated Corina Morariu 6-3, 6-4.

``I got off to a really good start 3-0, and I put a lot of pressure on her at the beginning,'' said Black, seeking her first career WTA Tour title. ``I was coming to the net a lot and pushing her a little with her backhand return.''

Reeves and Els Callens won their second-round matches Wednesday.
