IRVINGTON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer shot and wounded a robbery suspect during a chase on foot in New Jersey.

The Essex County prosecutor's office says a report of a robbery in progress sent Irvington officers to a liquor store at about 10 p.m. Friday. Prosecutors say arriving officers saw a suspect fleeing from the store and began pursuing him on foot.

Prosecutors say in the course of the pursuit, an Irvington officer fired his service weapon, striking the suspect, who was taken to a hospital for treatment. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

County prosecutors are required by attorney general guidelines to respond anytime a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon. Officials say the investigation is in the early stages and no further information was immediately available.
