WASHINGTON (AP) _ Audrey Codner scored 26 points, including the game-winning basket with 2:17 left, as St. Joseph's upset sixth-ranked George Washington 61-58 Wednesday night.
Codner had 18 points in the second half for the Hawks, who improved their record to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic-10. George Washington fell to 12-2 overall, 2-1 in the conference.
George Washington led 33-29 at halftime, but was outscored 19-7 over the first 7:30 of the second half. A basket by Codner at 15:54 put St. Joseph's ahead, 40-39, a spinning layup by Katie Curry made it 42-39, and before the Colonials could regroup three more baskets from Codner stretched the lead to 48-40.
George Washington, which shot only 40 percent from the field and just 50 percent from the foul line, cut the gap to 58-56 on a three-point play by Debbie Hemery with 4:22 left. The Colonials had five possessions in the rest of the game where they could have tied the game with a basket, but failed to get off a shot on four of them. Kristin McArdle and Jennifer Shasky tried 3- pointers in the final 10 seconds, but neither was able to make the game- tying shot.
Curry, who was in foul trouble much of the second half, had 15 points for the Hawks. McArdle led the Colonials with 13, Mary K. Nordling had 12 and Shasky 10.
