Jan. 14, 2001
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) _ Police used clubs to beat back fans trying to storm the field Sunday during a soccer game between Liberia and the Republic of Congo.
The game was played before a crowd of more than 50,000 at the national stadium, which has a capacity of 33,000.
The game was played hours after a vehicle filled with Liberian fans lost control not far from the stadium and somersaulted. The driver was killed while 11 others were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
Liberia won the African Cup of Nations qualifier 5-1 and was led by George Weah, a former world player of the year.
